Waterford Schools artists net awards, seek other honors
Four art students from the Waterford School District are seeing their artwork head off to New York to compete for national honors.
Amanda Hargraves, Amanda Gloth, and Michaela Saunders from Waterford Kettering High School, and Rachael Murray of Waterford Mott High School, were awarded Gold Key awards at the 2012 Scholastic Art Awards Competition for the Southeastern Michigan Region at the College of Creative Studies in Detroit.
Hargraves also had her portfolio selected for Best in Show. It also earned four Silver Keys and a Certificate of Merit, while Gloth also won a Silver Key and a Certificate of Merit.
Those four students will learn on March 15 if their works have been selected for national medals.
Kettering students Hannah Long (Certificate of Merit), Carly Merriman (Silver Key and Certificate of Merit), and Rachel Stopchinski (Certificate of Merit) also took home honors.
Mott students also earning awards were Grant Boufford (two Certificates of Merit); Amanda Cantarella (Silver Key); Julia Muzicuka (two Certificates of Merit); Samantha Stackpoole (Certificate of Merit); Ian Templeton (Silver Key); and Ella Wilbanks (Silver Key).
The students had their works selected from 4,300 submissions of art and photography from across Oakland and Wayne counties. Out of those submissions, 1,120 were chosen for the regional competition.

Why aren’t we told what type of art these students make?
Also, why aren’t there any pictures of their art associated with this article?
It’s great that these kids won, but right now we have no idea what they created in order to win.
Such information would be helpful to know in order to better appreciate their achievements.
AJ is right. These kids are producing some truly stunning work and a photo would make this story.
