Lake water tests analyzed after 2010 sewer spill
When 30,000 gallons of raw sewage overflowed into Wolverine Lake in late November 2010, village officials opted to collect water samples to see if there were any negative effects and have recently analyzed the results which indicate some short-term residual effects but minimal long-term impact. Water testing was conducted a month after the incident and then again a few months later. The first sampling was conducted while there was ice covering the lake, 20 and [...]

Village’s website sleeker following county’s redesign
The village of Wolverine Lake recently utilized the services of Oakland County to launch a new and more user-friendly website. Apparently the former website hosting company terminated their services with the village and village administration was scrambling to find a new resource. “In this case, necessity was the mother of invention,” Treasurer Mike Kondek said. “Our hosting company unceremoniously dumped us and luckily we made an inquiry to Oakland County. It was a nice debut [...]

Not a Ponzi scheme
From Flo Smith, Wolverine Lake: Texas Gov. Rick Perry has called Social Security a Ponzi scheme. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Throughout its 70-year existence, even in times of war and during recessions, Social Security has never failed to deliver monthly checks. In its present state, the system is solvent until 2037 and with a few minor changes, it will continue to be solvent far into the future. There is a great [...]

Village and police reach deal on four-year contract
After months of tweaking an agreement acceptable to both parties, the Wolverine Lake Village Council and the village’s police command officers have struck a four-year agreement that is retroactive to July 1, 2010 and runs through June 30, 2014. “It was a lot of house-keeping (and) clean up,” said Ed Sienkiewicz, a village councilman and member of the village’s negotiations committee. “There was a lot of conversation to get the verbiage down, but no stumbling [...]

Village changes approach to lake fish stocking
The village of Wolverine Lake will be stocking feeder fish, including golden shiners and fatheads, rather than sport fish in the waters of its namesake this year. The decision was based on recommendations from the village’s Water Management Board to propagate a healthy fish population that will ultimately increase the genetic diversity of northern pike and catfish, species that have the propensity to reproduce. Members of the Water Management Board spoke with several experts from [...]

Nearly 100 Wolverine Lake carp perish mysteriously
Theories are circulating as to why nearly 100 dead carp were found floating on the surface and shoreline of Wolverine Lake last month. As of July 5, residents were voicing complaints in the aftermath of the fish die-off. The stench of dead fish permeating the village became offensive and residents were hard-pressed about how to properly rid themselves of the odor. “There were complaints well around the village,” said Village Council President John Magee. “People [...]

The Wolverine Lake Village Council ratified a three-year agreement with the village’s Department of Public Works (DPW) employees that calls for no raises during that time period. The contract is effective July 1 through June 30, 2014. “In terms of salaries and given the large declines in revenues and projected revenues, we asked all employees to hold the line for the next few years,” said Village Council President John Magee. The DPW bargaining unit is [...]
