The tome by ‘T-Mac’
From Paul Kane, White Lake Township: I just read the book “Seize Freedom” by U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Waterford, White Lake, Highland, Milford, Commerce, Wolverine Lake, Walled, Wixom), a quick 200 pages. I remain affected by the authentic honesty in his words. He’s considered a politician, and yet there was zero B.S. He arrives with a law degree and a wealth of knowledge of history, then condenses and clearly articulates how things matter to America’s [...]

Huron Valley superintendent’s contract extended
Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jackie Johnston’s contract was extended for another year in a Thursday, June 9 unanimous vote of Board of Education members. Johnston’s contract is now effective July 1, 2011 and ends on June 30, 2014. The decision to extend Johnston’s contract adds fodder to the argument that some area school boards, including Huron Valley’s, have made a practice of annually extending their superintendents’ multi-year contracts, thereby keeping school districts on the hook [...]

With the addition of 12 new computers — bringing the library’s total up to 24 public computers — this past winter, the library was forced to relinquish shelf space, which has become the catalyst for addressing a long-term frustration for many library users: adult services being split between two floors. “Because of this, the library board [...]

Hartland ends Eagles’ streak as district champs
There will be no return to the Division 1 state finals this year for Huron Valley Lakeland, as it was eliminated from the state tournament by host Hartland, 1-0, in an MHSAA district semi-final on Saturday, June 4. The loss ended Lakeland’s (30-8) run of consecutive district championships at six, as Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) West Division champion Hartland defended its home diamond against last season’s Division 1 state runner-up. Abbie Minkster shut down [...]

Fine-dining restaurant The Root opens its doors
Forget the white linen table clothes. Forget the pretension associated with fine dining. Instead, focus on what makes restaurants truly exceptional: the food. At least that’s what owner Ed Mamou and executive chef James Rigato want to do at their new White Lake restaurant, The Root, a project three years in the making. “We want to strip away all pretense from fine dining. We want to get at the root of what is fine dining [...]
