Lauderback wins district wrestling title at tournament

Numerous lakes area wrestlers were in action last weekend as the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) state tournament began.

At the Division 1 individual district tournament at Hartland on Saturday, Feb. 11, Walled Lake Northern’s Christian Lauderback claimed a district title in the 130-pound class after he defeated Waterford Kettering’s Scott Stambaugh in the final.

Other top finishers included sophomore Ross Bahro of West Bloomfield taking the runner-up slot in the 119-pounds class, while Kyle Babin of Huron Valley Lakeland came in third in the 125-pound class.

Steve Shay of Huron Valley Milford came in fourth in the 130-pound class, while Danny Davidson of West Bloomfield was third in the 135-pound class.

Dave Dolehanty of Waterford Kettering placed fourth in the 140-pound class, while Luke Rea of Milford was third in the 145-pound class.

Patrick Kern of Walled Lake Northern placed third in the 152-pound class, while Mitch Craig of Walled Lake Central was third in the 160-pound class.

Connor Marion of Central was third in the 171-pound class, while his teammate Charles Sovel placed fourth in the 189-pound class.

Matt Okaiye and Daulton Arthur of Kettering were second and fourth, respectively, in the 215-pound class, while Ildo Luca of Central placed fourth at 285 pounds.

Freshman Daniel Shear of Central was the runner-up in the 103-pound class, while Northern’s Andrew Hahnenberg, Huron Valley Lakeland’s Brandon Calma, and Kettering’s Deven Acker finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 112-pound bracket.

Meanwhile, no lakes area teams were able to make it out of the MHSAA team district tournament on Thursday, Feb. 9.

At Novi, Walled Lake Western defeated Northville, 48-26, before falling to Novi Detroit Catholic Central in the final, 65-11.

At West Bloomfield, the host Lakers fell to eventual district champion Farmington Hills Harrison, 34-27, while Walled Lake Central fell to North Farmington, 36-31.

At Waterford Kettering, the host Captains defeated Pontiac, 47-24, before falling to Clarkston in the final, 58-15. Waterford Mott fell to Clarkston in the first round, 78-6.

At Walled Lake Northern, Hartland defeated the host Knights, 70-4, while Huron Valley Milford defeated Huron Valley Lakeland, 40-28.

Hartland then defeated Milford in the final, 58-11.

In the Division 2 team district tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 8, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s fell at home to Auburn Hills Avondale, 75-6.

Most of the remaining lakes area wrestlers will next compete in the MHSAA Division 1 individual regional tournament at Davison on Saturday, Feb. 18.
