Kiley not seeking another four-year term as treasurer

Highland Township Treasurer Judy Kiley has decided not to run for re-election this year.

“It’s been something my husband and I have talked about the last couple years,” she said. “We felt it was time for me to pursue other interests and be able to spend time together and travel.”

She also hopes to spend more time with her three children and six grand-children.

Kiley began working for the township part-time in 1996. In the fall of that year, she became the township’s deputy treasurer.

When former township treasurer Pat Woods passed away in October 1999, Kiley was appointed to finish out Woods’ four-year term.

Since then, Kiley has been elected to continue working as township treasurer by Highland residents, but now she has decided it’s time for a change.

“It’s time for a new chapter in my life,” she said, adding that she will miss interacting with the residents of Highland Township and being as involved with the community.

“I have truly enjoyed my job with the township ever since I started working here,” she said.

Kiley is involved in a number of community organizations, including the Highland Beautification Committee and Huron Valley Youth Assistance. While she said she will miss being involved with these activities, she said she is unsure at this time whether she will continue being as involved in the community.

“Right now, I’m not sure what I’m going to do,” she said. “I may step back and re-evaluate whether to continue to pursue those opportunities or to try new things that come up.”

Regardless, a new face will fill the void left by Kiley’s departure as treasurer come November.

The filing deadline for those interested in running for township treasurer, or another elected position, is May 15. The Highland Township treasurer serves a four-year term and currently earns $62,902 annually.
