Hersh, Finkelstein elected to WB Board of Education

An incumbent and a newcomer were elected to fill two West Bloomfield Board of Education seats during the school district’s Tuesday, Nov. 8 election.

Current board Treasurer Nelson Hersh was re-elected with 2,416 votes (28.37 percent), which was tops among all candidates. Hersh was first elected to the school board in 2003 and was re-elected in 2007.

Joining him will be Carol Finkelstein, an Orchard Lake resident who earned 1,860 votes (21.84 percent).

Finkelstein will replace current Trustee Melanie Torbert, whose term is set to expire on Dec. 31. Torbert didn’t file paperwork to seek re-election.

A total of 8,515 votes were cast in the school board election.

John Reed of West Bloomfield took third-place with 1,655 votes (19.44 percent), while Julie Beaty of Orchard Lake finished fourth with 1,476 votes (17.33 percent).

Karen M. Faett of West Bloomfield finished fifth with 609 votes (7.15 percent). CharRhonda Moye of West Bloomfield was sixth with 480 votes (5.64 percent).

There were also 19 votes cast for write-in candidates.

Hersh and Finkelstein will each serve six-year terms on the West Bloomfield Board of Education.

School board members aren’t paid for their service.

The election results are unofficial pending review by Oakland County officials.
