BOYS BASKETBALL

WALLED LAKE CENTRAL

Walled Lake Central and Waterford Mott clashed for a third time Feb. 19, but this time, it was the Corsairs who would come out on top.

The Vikings fell to Mott at home, 41-34, in a Kensington Lakes Activities Association Lakes Conference Tournament semifinal.

T.J. Warren led Central with 9 points, followed by Philip Nelson with 8.

Khalil Malone was Mott’s leading scorer with 15 points, while Quincy Norman had 13.

Mott fell at home to Grand Blanc in the KLAA Lakes Conference Tournament final Feb. 22.

That same night, Central bounced back with a 38-35 victory at home over South Lyon.

Warren and Jeturi Brown each had 12 points for the Vikings, who used a 12-7 run in the fourth quarter to earn the win.

Central hosted Plymouth Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 26 after press time. The Vikings will then open play in the MHSAA Class A District Tournament on Monday, March 4 against rival Walled Lake Western at North Farmington.

WALLED LAKE WESTERN

As hot as Walled Lake Western has played lately, Grand Blanc has just happened             to be hotter, or in this case undefeated.

The Warriors (12-6) fell on the road to the Bobcats, 65-59, Feb. 19 in a KLAA Lakes Conference Tournament semifinal.

Anthony Harris led Western with 18 points, while Jerald Booker had 14 and John Flowers had 13.

Kenneth Miller had a game-high 23 points to lead the Bobcats, who went on to defeat Waterford Mott on Feb. 22 to win the KLAA Lakes Conference title and earn a matchup against Canton for the KLAA Championship on Feb. 26.

Meanwhile, Western rebounded with a 45-42 victory over Plymouth Salem at home on Feb. 22 thanks in part to 10 points from Harris.

Western hosted South Lyon on Tuesday after press time in a final tune-up before its big showdown with rival Walled Lake Central on March 4 in an MHSAA Class A District first-round matchup.

WALLED LAKE NORTHERN

Walled Lake Northern split two KLAA crossover matchups this past week, including a 58-35 victory at home over Brighton on Feb. 22.

Gage Throgmorton led the Knights (6-13) with 21 points while Trent Lansaw contributed 11.

Earlier in the week, Northern fell on the road at Howell, 50-46, on Feb. 19.

Chris Cliff had 20 points for Northern, who will face host North Farmington in an MHSAA Class A District first-round game on Monday, March 4.

HURON VALLEY MILFORD

The Mavericks first fell on the road at Novi, 45-38, on Tuesday, Feb. 19, as the Wildcats used an 18-10 run in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.

Josh Corey had 11 points for Milford (11-8), while Jason Hugan had 9.

Milford then stumbled at home against Northville and suffered a 52-27 setback.

The Mavericks now have a week to prepare for the MHSAA Class A District Semifinal that it will host on March 6 against either South Lyon or Hartland.

HURON VALLEY LAKELAND

Huron Valley Lakeland scored two victories this past week as it looks to build momentum entering the district tournament.

The Eagles (7-12) first defeated Pinckney on the road, 41-39, on Feb. 19 as Nick Troxell and Timmy Brotherton each scored 9 points.

Lakeland then took care of business at home with a 54-45 victory over Livonia Stevenson as Brad Govan scored 14 points for the Eagles while Troxell had 12.

Lakeland will have a first-round bye in the MHSAA Class A District Tournament at North Farmington and will face either Walled Lake Central or Walled Lake Western in a district semifinal on March 4.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

WALLED LAKE WESTERN

Two losses this past week have Walled Lake Western beginning district tournament play this week on a three-game slide.

The Warriors (12-8) began their week with a 38-30 loss at Novi (18-2) on Feb. 18.

Erickah Woods led Western with 10 points.

Western then fell on the road at Northville, 42-22, on Feb. 21 as the Mustangs improved to 15-5.

The Warriors opened play in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Class A District Tournament against Walled Lake Central on Monday.

The winner will face Huron Valley Lakeland tonight, in a district semifinal at North Farmington. The North Farmington District final is on Friday.

 

HURON VALLEY LAKELAND

Huron Valley Lakeland split two games this past week and will await their next opponent in the MHSAA Class A District Tournament thanks to a first-round bye.

Lakeland began its week with a thrilling 45-37 overtime victory over Hartland on the road on Feb. 18.

Dominique Zigo led Lakeland with 17 points while Taylor Spierling had 10.

Lakeland then fell on the road to Livonia Franklin, 38-34, on Feb. 21 as Zigo finished with 11 points while Amanda Lock had 10.

The Eagles will next face either Walled Lake Central or Walled Lake Western in an MHSAA Class A District Tournament semifinal at North Farmington tonight.

The winner will advance to the North Farmington District final Friday.

WALLED LAKE NORTHERN

Walled Lake Northern dropped two games this past week and now hopes a first-round bye will aid it in the MHSAA Class A District Tournament.

The Knights (5-15) began their week with a 38-35 loss at home to South Lyon on Feb. 18 as Caitlin Crowley finished with 18 points.

Northern then fell at Livonia Churchill, 44-37, on Feb. 21.

The Knights will next play in an MHSAA Class A District semifinal tonight, at North Farmington against either Farmington or North Farmington.

The North Farmington District final is Friday.

HURON VALLEY MILFORD

Huron Valley Milford split two games this past week as it will have a first-round bye at the MHSAA Class A District Tournament at Fowlerville.

The Mavericks (7-12) began their week with a 44-37 loss at home to Livonia Franklin on Feb. 18.

Madison Kurtz led Milford with 20 points in the loss.

Milford then rebounded with a 36-27 victory at South Lyon on Thursday, Feb. 21 as Elise Gustafson scored 15 points to lead the Mavs while Kurtz had 10.

The Mavs will next play in an MHSAA Class A District Semifinal at Fowlerville tonight, against either Fowlerville or South Lyon.

The Fowlerville District final is on Friday.

WALLED LAKE CENTRAL

Walled Lake Central earned its second victory of the year in a 60-50 win over Wayne Memorial on the road Feb. 21.

The Vikings’ last victory came Dec. 6 when they defeated St. Catherine 61-34.

Central (2-18) began its week with a 52-8 loss to Livonia Stevenson on the road Feb. 18.

The Vikings played Walled Lake Central in an MHSAA Class A District first-round game Monday.

The winner will face Huron Valley Lakeland in a district semifinal tonight at North Farmington.

The North Farmington District final is on Friday.

ICE HOCKEY

The MHSAA Hockey Tournament begins this week with pre-regional play.

Walled Lake Central, champion of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association North Division, played a Division 2 pre-regional matchup against Walled Lake Western on Monday at Novi Ice Arena as part of the Hartland Region.

Walled Lake Northern also took on host Novi in the other pre-regional game Feb. 25.

The winners from both pre-regional games are scheduled to face each other tonight at Novi Ice Arena.

Meanwhile, rivals Huron Valley Lakeland and Huron Valley Milford faced each other in an MHSAA Division 2 pre-regional game Tuesday at Hartland Sports Center.

The winner will face host Hartland on Thursday in the pre-regional final.

The Hartland Regional Final is scheduled for Saturday, where the Hartland pre-regional and Novi pre-regional winners will play each other at Hartland Sports Center.
