Lady Mavericks Shut Down Walled Lake Central 37-24

The Milford Maverick defense took over in the second half to shut down Walled Lake Central 37-24 in the second round of the KLAA tournament. The lady Mavericks won their second consecutive KLAA playoff game on the road triggered by a full court press. Milford jumped out to a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The host Vikings stormed back in the second quarter as they outscored the Mavericks 10 to 3 to take a 13-11 lead into the locker room at the half.

The second half was all Milford as the Mavericks. The stout defense produced a number of easy baskets led by sophomore Elise Gustafson and junior guard Madison Kurtz. Kurtz drained a three-pointer at the 4:28 mark of the third quarter giving the Mavericks a 23-17 lead.

The stingy defense held W.L. Central to just two points in the fourth quarter and keyed the offense as the Mavericks scored 12 points to win going away 37-24. Elise Gustafson led the Mavericks with 19 points followed by Madison Kurtz with eight. Milford was solid from the free throw line as they went four for six. Junior forward Kayla Bryant led the Vikings with eight points. The Mavericks (6-12) will take on Livonia Churchill at Milford in the third round of the KLAA tournament while W.L. Central (1-17) goes on the road to battle Livonia Stevenson.
