The Lakeland girls basketball team upended the Walled Lake Western Warriors 41-38 in overtime on Friday, February 8.
Junior guard Dominique Zigo hit two free throws with 4.6 seconds to go for the win for the Lady Eagles. Zigo led all scorers with 15 points in the last regular season game for Lakeland. Walled Lake Western held a narrow 8-6 lead after a sluggish first quarter.
The Eagles turned on the offense in the second quarter as they scored 17 points to take a 23-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. The second half was highlighted by tough defense by both squads. The score was knotted at 34-34 heading into overtime.
Lakeland’s defense, led by Amanda Lock, played great in the extra stanza holding the Warriors to just four points. The Eagles scored seven points in the overtime led by Zigo’s clutch free throws for the victory. With the win, the Eagles head into the KLAA tournament with a 4-6 record in the North division and 8-8 overall.
