A look at the Nike missel base in Commerce Township <The video lives here!
So at the start of August the Spinal Column ran a story on the fires that have been occurring at the old Nike missel Base. Ever since I read that story I have been absolutely fascinated by it and wanted to learn more. I decided that I would make a video story about it and put it up on ou website. It was a lot of fun to make but I’m glad it’s finally done. You can view the video by clicking the link above.
It was an interesting experience filming on the site. It’s a complete mess and the ground is littered with debris. It made it hard to find places that were safe enough to film in. But luckily it all turned out all right and I think the video came out quite well.
Commerce Township supervisor Tom Zoner met me at the site one day and told me what he knew about the site. He was pretty young when the base was active but he still was able to tell me quite a bit.
Kevin Elliott, one of our reporters, sent me an article he wrote about the base years ago. In this article he interviewed a man names Roger Brittain who was stationed at the base during the sixties. In the article Brittain described some of the buildings. According to his description the building closest to the road was the motor pool. The Building just North of the motor pool was the headquarters-command. and the Third building from the road was the barracks. The building to the west that runs North and South was the mess hall.
You can see all of these buildings in the video but it is still hard to tell which one is which. Unfortunately the base won’t be standing for much longer but hopefully this video will preserve it’s legacy. I have alos included a picture gallery for your perusal
Thank you for reading!
