From Herb and Susan Happel, Highland Township:
We are writing to support the candidacy of Rick Hamill for the position of supervisor of Highland Township.
One of the challenges that will be faced by the person who is successful in being elected to this position is to reconcile the differing opinions of residents concerning the future of the township. There are those who wish there to be no changes and that Highland maintain its rural character within the existing structure. There are others who would have unfettered development similar to Hartland and White Lake townships.
The ultimate resolution will probably be a course somewhere in between. The supervisor will need to lead the township board and the general public toward this resolution. It will be crucial that, whatever course the township follows, the resources of the township, as well as public opinion, be directed toward a future which can be accepted by a majority of Highland residents.
Our long personal friendship with Rick Hamill leads us to conclude that he is the candidate and a leader who can best accomplish this goal. Rick is a consensus builder would listens, considers and explains. No supervisor will be able to please everyone. It will be important, however, that residents feel as though all points of view have been considered and reasons why particular courses of action are chosen, even if they are different from what some would have liked.
Of the candidates competing for the position of Highland Township supervisor, it is our conclusion that Rick Hamill is the person best suited to accomplish this task. We hope you will join us in voting for Rick on Aug. 7.
