Supporting Obama

From Denise “Chip” Black, Milford:

President Obama continues to demonstrate why we need him to serve for another four years. His courage and wisdom saved an industry, created jobs, and provided health care for millions of people. Recently, our President showed his willingness and ability to compromise by supporting women’s health care, and defending American religious freedom. At the same time Rush Limbaugh was denigrating Sandra Fluke, the President was supporting her. This is just one example demonstrating that President Obama has the ability to help families, defend our Constitution, and keep our nation secure with his intelligence, wisdom, compassion and empathy.

Wow! You are a true believer. Why do you bring up Sandra Fluke? She was not a good example and was actually an example of a nitwit (she was trying to get free contraception from a private university and thought it was wrong that she couldn’t get it for free even though she attends an expensive, private school). Also, how did he provide health care? His plan for health care hasn’t been implemented. Lastly, I am not sure he created jobs anywhere. Perhaps we should call it the creation of non-burdensome jobs. After all he created, new government programs that required more government paid workers (burdensome jobs, burdensome to the wallet). I am sorry, but you have to give us some examples of what was actually good and helpful.

      Mark:

“Also, how did he provide health care? His plan for health care hasn’t been implemented.”

Untrue! Parts of his health care bill have indeed already been implemented.

      Such as:

-Children Up To Age 26 Can Stay On Their Parents’ Insurance
-Lifetime Limits On Coverage are Banned
      -Rescissions are Banned
-No Discrimination Against Children With Pre-Existing Conditions
      -No Cost-Sharing for Preventive Care
      -Appeals Processes are Guaranteed
-Choice of Primary Care Provider is Guaranteed
-Direct Access for OB/GYN Services is Guaranteed
-Discrimination Based On Salary is Banned

“Lastly, I am not sure he created jobs anywhere.”

      Or really?

According to a study by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) a Michigan think tank, the bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler Group saved 1.5 million jobs. And more jobs are likely in the car pipeline thanks to hiring plans announced by GM, Chrysler and Ford Motor. CAR estimates that the auto industry will likely add almost 170,000 jobs nationwide by 2014 creating a jobs boom in the auto states of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the auto industry added 45,000 jobs in just the nine months after GM exited bankruptcy.

Further, under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s latest calculations, it estimates that the stimulus raised the number of employed Americans by 1 million to 2.9 million over the last quarter. At its peak, in the second quarter of 2010, it increased employment by 1.4 million to 3.3 million.

Also, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that the stimulus act Obama passed in February 2009 saved or created at least 1.4 million jobs.

And, a separate study by Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics and an advisor to John McCain’s presidential campaign, and Alan Blinder, a former Federal Reserve vice chairman and advisor to President Clinton, estimates that the Obama stimulus act created about 2.7 million jobs.

      Etc.

You can find more good examples with a simple Google search.

I almost burped up my Geritol when I read the letter from Denise “Chip” Black from Milford. I applaud your staff for allowing all political sides to express their opinion. May I express mine?

First, if I, as a senior am required to pay for birth control through my taxes for contraception so college students can copulate like little bunnies, taking from my Medicare funding, it only makes sense that all working people pay for all Senior’s out-of- pocket health costs to maintain our health as our functions diminish….. even Vitamins and Geritol.

Hardcore Democratic women have admitted that paying for everyone’s contraceptives has nothing to do with “women’s health” and anyone who believes that is naïve. It all has to do with Planned Parenthood’s push for their agenda.

She speaks of Obama defending the Constitution. Earth calling. If she has picked up a newspaper she will see that he is currently in trouble over Obamacare, as he and his administration may have ignored the Constitution. He decided that wasn’t enough, so let’s trample on religious rights. Regarding religious rights, in a meeting with the Catholic Bishops in America, he out and out lied and said he wouldn’t do such a thing. He’s a president who will say anything to get elected.

Nancy Pelosi said that they will find out what is in Obamacare once it’s implemented…..no need to read it beforehand. This type of reasoning has apparently trickled down to Obama supporters.

Last, as for jobs, our President has wasted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on companies that were failing, such as Solyndra, because of lack of judgment in looking at their financials beforehand. Then when the company failed, throwing hundreds of people out of work, the cost to taxpayers was increased by giving them Unemployment Benefits. Same with Fisker. Gas was $1.84 when Obama came into office. Today it is $3.88. Unemployment is still at 8%. The GDP was 2.2% last quarter and it was expected to be higher. The economy is not doing anything.

We need to look beyond his overall charisma. As far as his intelligence, he makes decisions but has to change his mind on many things he has said or his administration has failed to do as stated above. For instance, he said he would close Gitmo, but he changed. He said he would try terrorists in civil court and changed his mind. In summation, he shows his inexperience and lack of thought when proclaiming initial decisions. Please look beyond the cute smile.

For the person who thinks that people are against Obama because he is black, may I remind their indoctrinated baggage laden eyes that he is bi-racial, raised in part by a white mother and grandparents. The race card is getting very tired for those of us whities who see beyond it.

      Mary S.,

Even if everything you said was completely true – which it isn’t – Obama could still be considered a better president than Bush Jr. ever was.

I base that opinion on the fact that Obama has yet to start any wars or deregulate any major industries, thus leading to almost the entire economic collapse of the country – both of which Bush Jr. is responsible for doing.

Now to specifically address your comments:

      —-

“it only makes sense that all working people pay for all Senior’s out-of- pocket health costs to maintain our health as our functions diminish”

That’s what part of your Social Security check is for.

      —-

“paying for everyone’s contraceptives has nothing to do with “women’s health” and anyone who believes that is naïve”

Untrue! Contraceptives like birth control pills are often used to medically treat women for a wide range of conditions such as recurrent ovarian cysts, painful menstrual periods (dysmenorrhea), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and PMS.

Further, paying for contraceptives is a whole lot cheaper than paying for abortions or paying for child welfare or child services – the later of which can last for at least 18 years.

“It all has to do with Planned Parenthood’s push for their agenda.”

The only agenda Planned Parenthood has is to help women stay and/or get healthy and raise their families in healthy ways.

Specifically, Planned Parenthood’s agenda is as follows:

-Protect Women’s Access to Preventive Reproductive Health Care and Family Planning Services
-Guarantee Access to Quality and Affordable Health Care
      -Defend Access to Abortion Care
-Empower Individuals to Create Healthy Communities

So Planned Parenthood is pro women’s health and that is all.

      —-

“…so let’s trample on religious rights. Regarding religious rights, in a meeting with the Catholic Bishops in America, he out and out lied and said he wouldn’t do such a thing.”

The White House, defending a decision requiring many Catholic hospitals, schools and charities to offer contraception coverage to employees, argues that most women — including most Catholic women — use birth control. This fact comes from a huge study done by the Guttmacher Institute entitled “Countering Conventional Wisdom: New Evidence on Religion and Contraceptive Use”. This study specifically found that most women, including 98 percent of Catholic women, use contraception. So almost all Catholic women would in fact benefit from Obama’s healthcare contraceptive coverage decision. Thus the Catholic Bishops in America are actually against what is in the best interests of Catholic women.

“He’s a president who will say anything to get elected.”

You’re confusing Obama with Mitt Romney. According to polls by the Huffington Post, Americans consider President Obama to be the smartest and most honest of the current presidential candidates.

      —-

“Nancy Pelosi said that they will find out what is in Obamacare once it’s implemented…..no need to read it beforehand. This type of reasoning has apparently trickled down to Obama supporters.”

Anyone can read (and also download) both the entire Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 and the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) online.

Just go to the US Government Printing Office website:

“our President has wasted hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on companies that were failing, such as Solyndra, because of lack of judgment in looking at their financials beforehand”

Untrue! According to the New Yorker, the Solyndra vetting process, which relied on three thousand outside experts, was unusually rigorous. Many venture capitalists will tell you that, of the companies they fund, they expect a third, if not more, to fail. By those standards, the government is actually doing pretty well so far: under the stimulus program, the D.O.E. has handed out nearly twenty billion dollars in loan guarantees to renewable-energy companies, and only Solyndra has defaulted, accounting for a small fraction of the money guaranteed.

      —-

“Gas was $1.84 when Obama came into office. Today it is $3.88.”

True, however ‘natural’ gas is down 39.2% year-to-date. According to the June 2012 natural gas futures contracts on the CME, prices have fallen from about $5 per million BTUs to $2 over the last year. Further, the current US production of 5.6 million barrels a day of oil is the highest since 2003 – when Bush Jr. was in office.

Oil speculators and consumption of oil by other countries (like China and India) both have considerably more influence over the price of gas in America than Obama does. So you can’t blame him for the current price of gasoline. And here’s another fact: A recent report by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eric Nalder reveals that there’s an oil glut right now, and that increasing the domestic oil supply will likely have no effect on gas prices.

      —-

“he said he would close Gitmo, but he changed. He said he would try terrorists in civil court and changed his mind.”

He didn’t change his mind, he was prevented by the US Congress and several US Federal Courts from both closing Gitmo and from trying Gitmo detainees .

Congress has used its spending oversight authority both to forbid the White House from financing trials of Guantánamo captives on U.S. soil and to block the acquisition of a state prison in Illinois to hold captives currently held in Cuba who would not be put on trial. Further, congress has made it nearly impossible to transfer captives elsewhere. Legislation such as the 2011 Defense Authorization Bill, which was passed since Obama took office, has created a series of roadblocks that mean that only a federal court order or a national security waiver issued by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta could trump Congress and permit the release of a detainee to another country.

Neither is likely: U.S. District Court judges are not ruling in favor of captives in the dozens of unlawful detention suits winding their way from Cuba to the federal court in Washington. And on the occasions when those judges have ruled for detainees, the U.S. Court of Appeals has consistently overruled them in an ever-widening definition of who can be held as an affiliate of al Qaeda or the Taliban.

So Mary, your rebuttal to Denise “Chip” Black of Milford mostly consists of lies, half truths, and misinformation. And while you’re entitled to your opinions, your opinions are in fact almost completely wrong.
