West Bloomfield traveled to Romulus High School on Saturday, Oct. 22 for the “Dig Pink” Volleyball Tournament and came away with the championship.
The Lakers (15-17-2) defeated Port Huron, 25-18, 25-17, in the tournament final.
“This was a great outing for us,” said Lakers Head Coach Julian Wargo. “I have seen a lot of growth in the girls since the start of the season and I hope that it will continue through November.”
West Bloomfield steam-rolled through pool play, defeating Melvindale (25-4, 25-17), Ypsilanti Lincoln (25-11, 25-10) and Redford Union (25-6, 25-11) to earn a No. 1 seed in the Gold Bracket.
The Lakers took down host Romulus, 25-16, 25-10, in the tournament semi-finals to advance to the final, where they eventually won the championship.
Senior Jackie Pyles led the Lakers with 43 kills, 13 aces and 60 digs. Senior Missy Christenson also had 12 kills, 11 aces, and 60 digs. Junior Tara Heald also had 10 kills and 8 aces while senior
Lauren Merchak led all passers with 72 digs.
The Lakers also posted 21 blocks.
West Bloomfield started its week with a tri-match on Monday, Oct. 17, as it fell to Walled Lake Western (25-17, 18-25, 16-18) and Clarkston (14-25, 14-25).
