Walled Lake moves to create redistricting plan

With the closing of Maple and Twin Beach elementaries at the end of the current school year, the time has come for the Walled Lake Consolidated School District to begin to fit together the pieces for redistricting.

“It’s like a puzzle. We have to look at various pieces and look how they best fit together to accommodate all the necessary needs,” said Director of Community Relations Judy Evola.

As part of that process, the district is forming an advisory committee which will be comprised of a teacher from each pre-K – 8 school, a parent from each pre-K- 8 school, a principal from each pre-K – 8 school, a special education representative, a pre-school representative, parental chairpersons, as well as Deputy Superintendent Chris Delgado, who will act as facilitator.

The committee will look at various factors such as enrollment data, transportation considerations, facility configurations, budgetary implications, feeder patterns, continuity of neighborhoods and municipalities, and phasing in of boundaries.

“It’s going to involve changes. We’re closing two schools. There’s a transition going on in Walled Lake Schools as we work to redraw the boundaries,” Evola said.

The committee is expected to form recommendations for the new school attendance boundaries relative to pre-K – fifth-grade school buildings and present them to the board by February 2012.

Throughout this process, community input will be invaluable, and as such the district is looking for feedback. For more information, visit www.wlcsd.org or email redistricting@wlcsd.org.
