Huron Valley Lakeland remains tied for first-place in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division after two division wins this past week.
The Eagles began the week with a straight set victory at home over Waterford Mott, 25-6, 25-11, 25-11, on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
Freshman Madison Harris had 10 kills and 3 aces for Lakeland (24-8, 7-1 KLAA North) while Jordan Bromley had 9 kills and Ciara Schultz had 22 assists.
“This was a great game for our younger players to get valuable court time and they did a great job of taking care of business,” said Lakeland Head Coach Jen Cottrill.
The match also served as “Breast Cancer Awareness Night,” as the Eagles wore pink jerseys and raised more than $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
Brooke Rooney also had 13 digs for the Corsairs (6-12-3, 2-6)
Lakeland then followed up with another straight set victory over Walled Lake Western, 25-9, 25-13, 25-11, on Thursday, Oct. 6 on the road.
Schultz had 8 kills and 20 assists while Brittany Leonard – Senior had 8 kills and 6 aces and Kelly Merkle had 13 assists.
“I thought we did a good job of minimizing our errors and making Western earn their points,” Cottrill said.
That same night, the Corsairs fell at Waterford Kettering in three straight sets.
The Eagles then traveled to the Saline Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 8 and went undefeated in pool play with victories over Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, Washtenaw Christian and Carleton Airport.
Lakeland then defeated Carmen Ainsworth in the quarterfinals before falling to Bedford in the semifinals.
Schultz had 31 digs, 32 kills and 65 assists while libero Lindsey Hansard had 56 digs.
Waterford Mott also hosted its invitational on Saturday, Oct. 8.
The Corsairs fell to Salem, 22-25, 18-25, in the first round of the Gold bracket playoffs, which was won by Bloomfield Hills Marian, who defeated South Lyon in the championship match.
Kettering defeated the Academy of the Sacred Heart in the semifinals of the Silver Division bracket, 25-16, 25-17, before falling in the championship match to Rochester, 23-25, 28-26, 13-15.
Lakeland hosted Kettering yesterday, Tuesday, Oct. 11 after press time, while Mott hosted Walled Lake Northern.
Tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 13, Lakeland will host Walled Lake Central while Mott travels to Walled Lake Western to finish division play.
