Milford police arrested a 29-year-old man for aggravated/felonious assault after he allegedly pulled two guns on his wife before he was tackled to the ground by his two brothers-in-law.
The alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 9:53 p.m. at a residence on Cooley Lake Road.
Prior to the incident, the suspect allegedly told his wife, 29, that he drank four beers at his grandfather’s house and two more when he got home.
An argument about his drinking ensued and then the woman called her mother, who later arrived with her brother to take her and her son to the residence on Cooley Lake Road. While there, the victim was on the phone calling credit card companies to have her husband’s name removed from accounts because she was going to leave him, according to a Milford Police Department report. Then the suspect showed up, telling her that she had to have their son back home by noon the next day. The victim reportedly replied that she would call police and have them explain to her what she had to do legally.
According to police, the victim stated that the suspect then allegedly grabbed a gun in each hand, pointed both of them at her and said that he had nine more guns in his vehicle and that she would not take his son from him. When the victim tried to grab a phone, the suspect allegedly threw it across the room. She screamed to her family to call 911 before her two brothers barged in the room and tackled the man to the ground while the victim went into a back bedroom with her mother, sister-in-law and their children.
When police arrived, they saw the suspect standing on the front porch with another man. The suspect said he had a handgun in his right hip holster, a handgun in his left front jacket pocket and a knife on his belt. He was arrested and transported to the Milford police station and eventually had blood drawn.
The suspect was interviewed and stated that he got to the Cooley Lake residence by having someone drive him in his truck, which was registered to his grandfather, while someone followed him. He said that his wife didn’t agree to having their son home by noon the next day and that when he went to leave the room she screamed.
The suspect added that his wife’s brothers then jumped him and that they didn’t strike him, although he later reported in a written statement that they did. When the suspect got up, he said he pointed a knife at one of the brothers because that man allegedly said he would kill the suspect, and that the brother was standing at the front door near a rifle.
Someone else at the residence was able to coax the suspect into coming outside to talk, according to the police report.
The suspect denied pointing the guns at his wife.
The two brothers both said that they heard a scream and that’s when they tackled the suspect. They added that the suspect had a gun in his right hand and a knife in his left hand and that he threatened to kill them.
Officers confiscated a knife and three guns with ammunition, and two 16-ounce bottles of Bud Light from the suspect, who was arraigned on Thursday, Sept. 15 in 52-1 District Court. He posted a $5,000 cash bond. His next court date is scheduled for today, Wednesday, Sept. 21.
