Our Lady trounces foes en route to regional crown

The Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes softball team not only won a regional championship, but it made a statement.

The Lakers defeated both Webberville and Portland St. Patrick on Saturday, June 11 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) regional tournament at Our Lady in dominating fashion.

Our Lady started the day by knocking out Webberville, 18-0, in three innings in the regional semi-final.

Lauren Robak, Sarah Nuss and Abbey Troy each hit three RBIs in the semi-final while Michelle Cottrell picked up the win in the circle for Our Lady.

The Lakers were then matched up with Portland St. Patrick in the regional final and won the regional championship with a 12-4 victory, marking Our Lady’s first regional crown since 2006.

Our Lady scored four runs in the third inning, four runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth.

Angie Mastromatteo hit five RBIs in the game while Cottrell picked up her second victory of the day.

“We played good defense and hit well at the plate,” Our Lady Head Coach Steve Troy said.

Our Lady was scheduled to take on Unionville-Sebewaing at Saginaw Valley State University on Tuesday, June 14 in an MHSAA Division 4 state quarter-final.

“If we hit the ball and play good defense, we should be okay,” Troy said.

The winner will advance to the MHSAA Division 4 state semi-finals on Friday, June 17 at Bailey Creek in Battle Creek to face either Rapid River or Manistee Catholic Central.

The MHSAA Division 4 state final is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 and the Lakers hope it will be them celebrating a state championship.

For some players including Robak, it would mark their second state championship of the year to go along with the title won in girls’ basketball last March.
