Walled Lake Central put together a strong run in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) district tournament last week, advancing to the district final before falling to Walled Lake Northern.
Central began the week with an 8-2 victory at home over Walled Lake Western in an MHSAA pre-district game on Tuesday, May 31.
Taylor Krumm hit 3-for-3 while Sydney Glanz hit 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Central.
Kelsey Wolschlager also hit 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Brianna Krus hit 2-for-4 and Chelsea Herron hit 2-for-3.
Central then took on Brighton in an MHSAA district semi-final at South Lyon on Saturday, June 4 and defeated the Bulldogs in 9 innings, 8-7.
The Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks in part to Marnie Hawes’ bases-loaded triple. Central then scored three runs in the fifth inning, including a Krus double that drove in Krumm and Wolschlager.
However, Brighton fought back with two runs in the sixth to make the game 7-3 before Morgan Pilat hit a bases-loaded triple to help tie the game at 7-7.
The score would remain tied until the ninth inning, which began with Krus singling and advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Glanz.
Wolschlager then hit an RBI to bring Krus home for the game-winning run.
Melissa Fannon picked up the win in the circle for Central, giving up four hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
The Vikings then faced Walled Lake Northern in the South Lyon district final, but Central was defeated by the Knights, 8-2.
Hawes hit two RBIs for Central in the loss that ended its season.
