St. Mary's beats Farmington in quarter-final

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s defeated Farmington, 11-9, in a state regional quarter-final at home on Thursday, May 26.

Chris Koski scored 5 goals for the Eaglets (8-11), while Nick Parr had 3 goals and 2 assists and Kevin Considine had 2 goals and 2 assists.

While St. Mary’s Head Coach Greg Normand said his team has turned things around offensively and defensively, goaltending remains an issue, after he played three goaltenders and they gave up 9 goals on 12 shots on Thursday.

“We need to find goaltending. The goalies just aren’t seeing and we need to get some average saves,” Normand said. “Obviously, we’ve gotten better as a team, but lacrosse is about skill and we wane a little bit and commit dumb penalties. But, we play hard every night.”

The Eaglets will next take on Grosse Pointe South in an MHSAA regional semi-final at Farmington tonight, Wednesday, May 1.

The regional final is scheduled for Friday, May 3 at Farmington.

Walled Lake Western split its final two games of the season.

The Warriors defeated Belleville, 13-6, as Nick Gallmeier and Dalton Atwater each had a hat trick, while Vlad Kovalskiy and Evan Link each had two goals and Wes Raske, Josh Raptis, and Jason Heitzeg each scored a goal for Western.

The Warriors then faced Madison Heights Bishop Foley in a pre-regional game at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac due to inclement weather and fell, 12-8.

Western trailed, 5-4, at halftime before Foley scored four consecutive goals in the third quarter that did the Warriors in.

Atwater led the Warriors with 6 goals on the day.

“Our senior goalie Blake Weinberger (15 saves) really kept us in the game with several tremendous saves in the fourth when we had cut the Foley lead to two,” said Western Head Coach Mark White.

“We have a tremendous core group of young players, especially on offense and combine that with our JV team (10-5 record and City Cup Champions), our future is really bright for the next few seasons. I am very hopeful and enjoyed the progress our team made this season.”

In other Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) tournament action this past week, Brighton eliminated Huron Valley Unified, 19-6, in a regional quarter-final; Waterford Unified was eliminated, 17-1, by Midland in a pre-regional game; and Flint Powers Catholic defeated Walled Lake Northern, 7-4 in a regional quarter-final.
