Hartland tops Vikings for a conference title

Walled Lake Central fell to Hartland, 5-2, in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) Lakes Conference championship game on Monday, May 23.

Shane Daykin and Brandon Chchocki both pitched for the Vikings and gave up a combined 7 hits and two walks in the game, but Central (18-10) couldn’t provide any run support.

Hartland moved to 25-2 on the season and played Livonia Stevenson in the KLAA Championship game on Saturday, May 28, after press time.

Joe Harris and Austin Telling each hit 2-for-3 for Central, which was scheduled to play at Canton on Friday, May 27 after deadline and then in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) district tournament beginning on Tuesday, May 31.

Central will play in the South Lyon district, where it will be joined by Walled Lake Western, Walled Lake Northern, Brighton and host South Lyon.

Walled Lake Western defeated Pinckney, 8-7, in eight innings on Monday, May 23.

Western (13-10) led 7-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Pinckney scored three runs to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of eighth and with a 1-1 count, Niklas Heglin hit a solo home run to center field for the game-winning run for Western.

Heglin hit 2-for-5 with a home run and a stolen base while Ryan Bone was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Jason Gamble pitched a complete game for the Warriors as he struck out four batters and walked two while giving up only six hits.

Huron Valley Milford defeated Waterford Mott, 5-4, in eight innings on Monday, May 23.

The game was tied at 3-3 in the ninth inning before Mott took a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Matreal led off with a walk before Beau Prey advanced him to second with a sacrifice bunt.

Alex Larson then walked before Kevin Bailey loaded the bases with a single.

Jacob Lee then hit a single that drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs for Milford (14-14).

“We dug pretty deep to pull out the victory. I was very happy to see the guys have a never-say-die attitude,” said Milford Head Coach Brett Vaughn.

Milford began play in the MHSAA district tournament on Tuesday, May 31 in the Hartland district, along with Huron Valley Lakeland, Holly, Fenton and host Hartland.

Mott (8-20) is in the Clarkston district, along with Waterford Kettering, Pontiac, Auburn Hills Avondale and host Clarkston.

In other games on Monday, May 23, Howell defeated Huron Valley Lakeland, 13-3; Brighton defeated Walled Lake Northern, 8-4; and Waterford Kettering won over Grand Blanc, 13-7.
