Wolverine Lake, Commerce parks panels join forces

By doubling their efforts, the Wolverine Lake and Commerce Township parks and recreation committees are working to enrich both communities with more activities and enhanced park facilities.

According to Wolverine Lake Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman Rick Pobe, an agreement has been forged between both panels to meet at least twice a year to take on some key projects beneficial to both communities. One initial change could help both boards meet face-to-face more often.

“Instead of the fourth Monday of the month like Commerce’s, we would meet on the third Monday of each month if it’s approved,” Pobe said.

Commerce also agreed to appoint a Wolverine Lake representative to its Parks and Recreation Committee once there is a vacancy.

“They are in the process of changing their by-laws to reflect that,” Pobe said.

Wolverine Lake officials were also included in master plan discussions for the Hickory Glen Park on Glengary Road between Commerce and Benstein roads.

“We’re looking at developing the park for more recreational expansion vs. all football and baseball fields,” Pobe said.
Some suggestions include disc golf, Bocce ball, and a dog park.

“These would be added to a master plan over the next five to 10 years if approved,” Pobe said.

Initially a disc golf course was plotted out at Clara Miller Park, but it was untenable.

“It wasn’t feasible for 18 holes, but it could be at Hickory Glen where it’s a natural setting vs. a traditional park setting,” Pobe said.

The panels also plan to collaborate on the possibility of revitalizing the Vita Trail.

“We will be seeking funding alternatives — Commerce has full-time people available to help us with grants,” Pobe said.

A walkway from Oakley Park to Glengary is already approved and in the works. The walkways will link Wolverine Lake to Commerce via the Lakes Trail system.

Lastly, the two boards are working together to present a summer concert series this year.

“We’re approaching mutual projects as a joint group to get people to participate in more recreational activities,” Pobe said.
