Walled Lake Northern continued its impressive start to the season with a sweep of a doubleheader against Berkley on Thursday, April 21.
Northern (5-0) took the opening game in dominant fashion with a 10-0 shutout.
Kristina Weltzin proved unstoppable as she pitched a one-hitter and struck out 11 batters for her third win of the season in addition to driving in a run.
Mackensy Lakian hit three RBIs for the Knights while Caitlyn Kelly also hit two RBIs and Sam Kern drove in a run.
Lakian, now a senior, is coming off a 2010 season in which she batted .478 with 29 RBIs, 31 runs scored, 13 doubles, five triples, a home run and six stolen bases, earning an All-State honorable mention from the MHSSCA.
Northern then followed up with a 13-1 victory to complete the sweep.
Corrina Rotondo threw a two-hitter and struck out eight batters while Stephanie Marzetti hit 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Kari Knight also hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Kern hit 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Knight, now a senior, batted .400 and drove home 40 runs in addition to scoring 25 runs, hitting 15 doubles, three triples and three home runs in 2010.
The Knights were scheduled to host Auburn Hills Avondale on Monday, April 25 in a meeting that was postponed by rain on Monday, April 18.
Northern will then travel to Walled Lake Western today, Wednesday, April 27 before traveling to Howell on Friday, April 29.
The Knights’ first meeting of the season with Kensington Lakes Activities Association North division rival Huron Valley Lakeland is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4.
Last season, Northern shared the KLAA North title with the Eagles and this season will serve as a barometer of whether Northern has officially caught up with Lakeland, long-time head of the class of lakes area softball.
