Country Day and Seaholm both get best of Northern

It was a rough week for Walled Lake Northern as it went 0-3 against three elite teams from Birmingham.

The Knights (2-5) began the week by hosting Birmingham Detroit Country Day on Thursday, April 21 and falling to the Yellow Jackets, 13-12.

Northern had a 7-5 lead after the fourth inning, but Country Day responded with eight runs in the top of the fifth.

The Knights tried to rally with one run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth and two in the seventh but would fall one run short.

Cole Lubin hit a three-run home run and scored two runs to lead the Knights while Todd Larson scored three runs. Dalton Cozart also hit 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI for Northern while Brady Schafer hit 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.

“This turned into a wild one and I was proud of how our guys battled back and didn’t give up after giving up eight runs in the fifth inning.”

Northern then traveled to Birmingham Seaholm on Saturday, April 23 for a doubleheader and fell to the Maples in the opener, 6-5, in eight innings.

The Knights had a 4-0 lead behind strong pitching from Brandon Grodman, but Seaholm rallied to pick up the win.

Cole Lubin scored a run for Northern in the loss while Austin Bommarito scored two runs. Lubin was credited with the loss on the mound for Northern as he pitched 1 and one-third innings allowing two hits and one run while walking three batters and striking out two.

Northern then fell in the nightcap, 16-4, after spotting the Maples a 5-0 lead before rallying to cut Seaholm’s lead to 5-4.

Ted Lilley hit 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases.

Northern was scheduled to face North Farmington on Monday, April 18 and South Lyon on Tuesday, April 19, but both meetings were postponed by rain.

The Knights played against Waterford Mott on Monday, April 25 after press time and will play a doubleheader at Walled Lake Western today, Wednesday, April 27 before traveling to Howell on Friday, April 29.
