It may be early in the season, but it’s never too early to win a championship as Walled Lake Northern claimed the Walled Lake City Cup with an 9-3 victory over Walled Lake Central on Wednesday, April 20.
The City Cup is awarded to the winner of the annual head-to-head meetings between Walled Lake Central, Northern and Western.
The Knights defeated Western, 11-3, back on March 25 before defeating Central to earn the Cup.
Northern jumped on the Vikings early in the match as senior Arik Aninos scored a hat trick, with two goals coming unassisted and the other coming from senior Jake Hefner.
Junior Lucas Wilson scored unassisted in the first half.
Action picked up in the third quarter as junior Logan Johnson scored two goals for Northern, one unassisted and the other coming from sophomore Mark McCallum, while junior Marcus Tomyn scored with an assist from sophomore Alex Holm.
Eric Rosteck scored for the Vikings in the third quarter before senior Tyler Grady scored unassisted in the fourth quarter.
However, Alex Holm and Justin Fishback each scored unassisted while Ronnie Clark scored for Northern with an assist from Logan Johnson in the fourth to close out the scoring as the Knights moved to 4-3 on the season.
Central then traveled north to Traverse City West on Saturday, April 23 and fell 19-6 to remain winless at 0-7 on the season.
The Vikings will travel to Brighton today, Wednesday, April 27 before traveling to Howell on Saturday, April 30 and hosting Waterford Unified on Monday, May 2.
Northern was scheduled to face Brighton on the road on Monday, April 25 after press time and will host Howell today, Wednesday, April 27 before closing out the month on Friday, April 29 against Waterford Unified at Waterford Kettering.
