Northern finishes in 13th place at state swim finals

The lakes area’s best swimmers were on display this past weekend in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) boys swimming and diving finals on Saturday, March 12.

At the MHSAA Division 2 Finals at Eastern Michigan University, Walled Lake Northern nabbed a 13th-place finish with 63 total points.

The Knights’ best finish came in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the team of Jakob Barnard, Alex Gaucher, Alex Chow and Evan Darbyshire finished seventh with a time of 3:17.40.

The same team also finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.45.

Darbyshire also placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.44, while Barnard finished 15th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.67.

Northern’s team of Chow, Darbyshire, Barnard and Jud VanWyk finished 12th in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.25).

In the diving event, Huron Valley Milford’s Scott Jesup placed sixth with a total score of 385.30, while Walled Lake Central’s Alex Mexicotte finished 10th with a score of 343.20.

At the Division 1 Finals at Oakland University, Huron Valley Lakeland’s Tony Cipponeri took 13th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.03 after swimming a time of 22.08 in the preliminaries.

West Bloomfield’s Shameek Mohile finished 20th in the diving competition with a score of 226.05.
