Lakeland prevails; Warriors, Corsairs, Vikes, Caps lose

Huron Valley Lakeland defeated rival Huron Valley Milford, 45-35, in a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) District Tournament game on Monday, March 7 at Lakeland.

Lakeland (11-11) led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 19-18 at halftime. The Eagles then outscored the Mavericks 26-17 in the second half to pull away and secure the victory.

Ryan Zukowski led the Eagles with 14 points while Joey Rossi had 9 points and Casey Palanca had 8.

Joey Miller led the Mavs (10-11) with 11 points.

Lakeland then fell to rival Walled Lake Northern, 58-57, on its home floor in an MHSAA district semi-final on Wednesday, March 9, on a game-winning 3-pointer by Jared Sheena.

Walled Lake Central (14-7) fell in an MHSAA district semi-final to Hartland, 48-47, on Wednesday, March 9 at Huron Valley Lakeland, ending a season that saw it win the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) North Division title.

The Vikings trailed 9-6 at the end of the first quarter before going on a 14-9 run in the second quarter to take a 20-18 lead at halftime.

Hartland then took a 30-29 lead at the end of the third quarter and the fourth quarter was evenly contested with the score tied a 47-47 late in the game.

After a Central missed shot, Matt Poches grabbed the rebound and drew a controversial foul with 1.8 seconds left, sending him to the free-throw line.

He converted the first and intentionally missed the second to run out the clock.

Poches finished with 25 points for Hartland, who went on to defeat Walled Lake Northern in overtime two nights later to win the district title.

Zac Leimbach had 15 points for Central, while Louis Nelson had 12.

Waterford Mott (9-10) fell to Auburn Hills Avondale, 59-53, in an MHSAA district semi-final on Wednesday, March 9 at Troy Athens.

DeVonte Daniel led the Corsairs with 18 points.

Waterford Kettering (9-12) fell to Auburn Hills Avondale, 66-36, in an MHSAA district tournament game at Troy Athens on Monday, March 7.

Brett Hoffman had 13 points for the Captains.

Walled Lake Western (5-16) fell to host Farmington, 59-37, in an MHSAA district tournament game on Monday, March 7.

Cameron Vieaux had 16 points for the Warriors while Will Griffin had 13.
