Northern notches wins; Milford and Western split pair

Huron Valley Milford split two games this past week to finish the regular season with a record of 7-13.

The Mavericks began the week with a 59-37 victory over Livonia Churchill at home on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Milford led 33-24 at halftime before pulling away in the second half, outscoring Churchill 26-13.

Lindsey Bandyk led the Mavs with 19 points, 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Claire Fuelling had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Lauren Smith was credited with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Milford then traveled to South Lyon on Thursday, Feb. 24 and fell to the Lions, 44-28.

“We must give credit to South Lyon for being patient on offense and crashing the offensive boards,” said Milford Head Coach Jennifer VanGoethem. “They got several second chance shots which converted to points. Offensively, we were rushing and forcing too many passes.”

Smith finished with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 4 steals.

Milford played Howell in a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) district tournament game at Hartland on Monday, Feb. 28 after press time, with the winner taking on Walled Lake Central tonight, Wednesday, March 2. The district final is Friday, Feb. 4.

Walled Lake Northern scored two wins last week to finish the regular season at 5-15.

The Knights defeated South Lyon East, 43-29, on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 22 before defeating Wayne Memorial, 46-42, on the road on Thursday, Feb. 24.

Northern played host to Hartland in an MHSAA district tournament game on Monday, Feb. 28 after press time, with the winner facing Huron Valley Lakeland tonight, Wednesday, March 2.

Walled Lake Central (6-14) dropped its final two regular season games, 39-26 at Salem on Tuesday, Feb. 22 and 43-36 at Livonia Franklin on Thursday, Feb. 24.

Walled Lake Central has a first-round bye in the MHSAA district tournament and will face either Huron Valley Milford or Howell tonight, Wednesday, March 2 at Hartland.

Walled Lake Western (6-14) split its final two regular season games, falling at South Lyon, 42-21, on Tuesday, Feb. 22 before defeating Livonia Churchill, 41-38, on Thursday, Feb. 24.

Western has a first-round bye in the MHSAA District Tournament at Farmington and will face either host Farmington or Farmington Hills Harrison tonight, Wednesday, March 2.

The district final is scheduled for Friday, March 4.
