Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes boys basketball team is looking to follow in the footsteps of its girls team and win a Catholic League title, and took the first step with a 55-50 victory over Marine City Cardinal Mooney at the Aquinas Center in Detroit in a Catholic League C-D Division playoff game on Saturday, Feb. 19.
The Lakers (13-5) were led by Austin Karbowski with 19 points. Garrett Ross scored 14 points.
Our Lady will next play in a Catholic League semi-final game tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 23, against Detroit Loyola at Bloomfield Hills Marian.
The winner will advance to the Catholic League C-D Division championship game at Calihan Hall on the campus of Detroit Mercy on Sunday, Feb. 27.
The Lakers began the week with two regular season games, starting with an 82-18 victory at Mt. Carmel on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
Karbowski led Our Lady with 19 points.
Our Lady then traveled to Genesee Christian on Thursday, Feb. 17 and fell 77-69.
The Lakers trailed 24-14 at the end of the first quarter before going on a 25-18 run in the second quarter to trail 42-39 at halftime.
Our Lady then took a 57-53 lead at the end of the the third quarter, but Genesee Christian took control in the fourth quarter with a 24-12 run.
Hunter Selby scored 26 points for Genesee, while Justin Denney followed with 25.
Karbowski finished with 31 points for Our Lady.
“Genesee shot 43 free throws to our 10 and they were physical, but it helped us prepare for Cardinal Mooney,” said Our Lady Head Coach Sean Wightman. “We’re trying to focus on being more selective in our shots and doing a better job defensively.”
