Our Lady splits two games as league tournament nears

Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes split two games last week as it inched closer to clinching a share of the Detroit Catholic League Intersectional Division title.

Our Lady (11-4 overall, 10-2 in the Intersectional Division) began the week with a 57-47 victory at home over Detroit Cristo Rey on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

The Lakers led 29-24 at halftime and outscored Cristo Rey 28-23 in the second half.

Eric Carter led Cristo Rey (8-7, 7-7) with 17 points while Maurice Champion had 15 and Daron Hill had 12.

However, it was a different story for Our Lady when it traveled to Everest Collegiate on Friday, Feb. 11 as the Lakers fell, 62-56, in overtime.

Our Lady was in trouble early as it trailed 25-13 at halftime, but rebounded in the second half by outscoring Everest, 24-12, in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.

However, Our Lady was outscored by Everest in overtime, 13-7, to suffer defeat despite a valiant effort.

Karbowski led all scorers with 32 points on the night, including 18-for-23 shooting from the free-throw line, while Ross had 12 points.

Blake Beauchamp led Everest (10-5, 8-4) with 18 points while Richie Cross had 11 and Ben Marcial had 10.

The Lakers will travel to Genesee Christian on Thursday, Feb. 17 before beginning play in the Catholic League C-D Division tournament at the old Aquinas Learning Center on Saturday, Feb. 19.
