Lakeland falls to Rochester, shuts out St. Clair Shores

Huron Valley Lakeland split two games last week at the Michigan Public High School Hockey Invitational Showcase at the Chelsea Arctic Coliseum.

The Eagles began with a 4-1 loss to Rochester United on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Rochester had a 2-0 lead after two periods before Jordan Blanzy got Lakeland on the board in the third period off a Kyle Zunich assist. However, Rochester would convert on a Lakeland penalty with a power-play goal and would later add an empty net goal to cap off the win.

The Eagles outshot Rochester 25-21, as Trevor Kalinowski had 18 saves for Lakeland and Ian Mercer had 24 for Rochester.

However, Lakeland rebounded on Saturday, Feb. 12 with a 3-0 shutout victory over St. Clair Shores Unified.

Blanzy scored two goals for the Eagles while Mitch Leist stopped all 30 Saints’ shots to earn the shutout in net. Evan Ronayne also had 2 assists.

“Leist played a strong game in net for us. He made a lot of saves from shots down low around the net,” said Lakeland Head Coach Tim Ronayne.

Lakeland played at Howell yesterday, Tuesday, Feb. 15 after press time and will take on Huron Valley Milford tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 16 at Lakeland Ice Arena before traveling to Canton on Saturday, Feb. 19.
