A former Waterford police officer who allegedly fired his gun in public in late November while under the influence of alcohol has been charged with two weapons offenses.
Brian Mahoney was off duty at the time of the incident at 1:18 a.m. on Nov. 25, when he allegedly fired his weapon in front of the Crescent Lake Inn, located on Elizabeth Lake Road, in Waterford Township. No one was injured during the incident.
Apparently Mahoney had been laid off from the Waterford police force and was employed by Saginaw County at the time.
According to 51st District Court records, Mahoney is being charged with a pair of misdemeanor charges that include possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and reckless use of a gun.
Mahoney is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 1:30 p.m. with Judge Richard Kuhn Jr. presiding.

Is anyone else disturbed that a police officer is only being charged with misdemeanors for firing a gun at a bar? If this was a citizen they would already be in jail on felony charges…

I would fully expect that the defendant/cop plead guilty to the misdemeanor with promise the charges to be expunged as soon as possible. Likely less than the five years the law specifies. Recall that the twp prosecutor was upset he was not offered the district court judicial appointment and the Oakland Press did a story that he had been ‘mistreated’. It was rightly pointed out that any prosecutor who has worked for several decades for the township is glued to protecting the township. A long term township prosecutor would not be fair to the defendants.
This is such an example why Waterford residents should not trust the twp prosecutor is fair and balanced. Rather he is in the pocket of the township political machine.
