Police look to identify man whose dog bit boy

Orchard Lake police are reaching out to the community for help in identifying a man whose dog bit a 12-year-old boy at the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DNRE) boat launch site off Orchard Lake Road north of Pontiac Trail on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

The goal is for the man to step forward and inform the family whether the dog has had its rabies shots.

The boy and his father were ice fishing on Orchard Lake at around 1:30 p.m. when they observed a white male, around 60-years-old, in the area with his unleashed German shepherd. As the boy walked over to their vehicle to leave, the dog allegedly bit the boy in the buttocks.

The father thought since the boy was wearing heavy clothing, the bite didn’t penetrate the skin, but upon closer introspection it had and now the boy must go through a series of rabies shots, which are known to be painful.

Police are hoping that if the dog owner contacts them and informs them that the dog has been immunized, the child won’t have to endure the rabies treatment.

The dog owner reportedly was driving a silver Honda Civic or Accord at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information about the dog owner is asked to call the Orchard Lake Police Department at 248-682-2400.
