Man uninjured after he notices his van on fire

The driver of a van used to assist handicapped people got a nasty surprise when he returned from a quick jaunt to the bank on Friday, Jan. 14.

According to Oakland County Sheriff’s Department reports, the driver had stopped at the TCF Bank branch located at 555 Haggerty Road in Commerce Township to do some personal banking. When he got back out to the van, he noticed the smell of smoke in the car. Looking into the back of the van, he saw flames coming out of one of the rear heat vents.

He got out of the van and tried to control the fire with a small fire extinguisher until Commerce Township firefighters showed up to finish the job.

There were no injuries reported.
