Driver killed when car slid, crashed into tree

A 43-year-old Highland Township resident was pronounced dead at the scene after his car hit a tree on Duck Lake Road south of Engleman on Sunday, Jan. 23 at approximately 11 p.m.

David Rainey was driving a 1995 Dodge Neon southbound on Duck Lake Road when he apparently lost control of the vehicle in a curve just south of Engleman. His vehicle slid sideways until the driver’s-side door struck the tree.

No one else was in the vehicle, although the driver’s son was following his father in a second vehicle and witnessed the crash.

Rainey was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, and alcohol isn’t believed to be a contributing factor in the accident.

The crash remains under the investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit.
