Bogie Lake brothers Huron Valley Lakeland and Walled Lake Northern met on the Knights’ home floor on Friday, Jan. 14 with Lakeland coming out on top, 63-60.
The Eagles (4-3 overall, 1-2 in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association North Division) trailed by 14 at halftime, but used a 22-9 run in the third quarter to get back in the game.
Troy Baertson hit 2 free-throws for the Eagles with 8 seconds left to give them a three-point lead.
Northern’s last-second shot that would have knotted the game at 63-63 hit off the rim as time expired.
Lakeland was led by Baertson’s 19 points and Joey Rossi’s 14 points.
The Knights (2-6, 0-3) were led by Jared Sheena’s 22 points, including three 3-pointers; while Ryan Soulet chipped in with 12 points and 5 assists and Gage Throgmorton also had 12 points.
Lakeland began the week with a 45-38 loss at Waterford Kettering in double overtime on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
The game was evenly matched until the Eagles were outscored by the Captains in the extra session, 10-2.
Ryan Zukowski led Lakeland with 11 points while Baertson had 10.
Meanwhile, Northern traveled to Walled Lake Central on Jan. 11 and fell to the Vikings, 60-53.
The Vikings led 19-5 at the end of the first quarter and built the lead up to 23 points at halftime.
Northern cut the lead to 55-51 with 1:20 left, but Central hit its free throws down the stretch to win.
Soulet led Northern with 18 points, 6 rebounds and 8 steals. Sheena had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Lakeland hosted Walled Lake Western yesterday, Tuesday, Jan. 18 after press time while Northern hosted Waterford Kettering.
On Friday, Jan. 21, Lakeland will host Waterford Mott while Northern will travel to Walled Lake Western.
